Researcher, Educator, and Nonprofit Consultant

Karen Miner-Romanoff is a law and society fellow at New York University. Affiliated with the university since 2016, she teaches courses in criminology, juvenile justice, and related topics to students in the College of Arts and Sciences and recently won the Outstanding Teacher Award. Karen Miner-Romanoff brings to her role diverse expertise as an attorney, researcher, consultant, educator, and university administrator. The recipient of a law degree and both a master’s degree and a PhD in criminology, she has more than 25 years of experience in higher education.

Nonprofit Consultant

Outside of academia, Dr. Miner-Romanoff maintains a parallel career as a nonprofit consultant. Having developed theories of change through her research, she partners with social services organizations to benefit the populations they serve. She is chair emeritus of the board and program committee chair of the Arthur Project, which has awarded her its Legacy Award, and vice president of the board of the Korda Institute for Teaching. She also serves as program committee chair for Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City and has served as an evaluation specialist for the Petey Greene Program.

Professional Career

Karen Miner-Romanoff began her career as a lawyer practicing labor and employment law. She later worked as a special assistant in the Office of the Attorney General of Ohio and clerked for Judge Nicholas Walinski of the US District Court, Northern District of Ohio, and for Judge Alan Norris of the US Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit.

Dr. Miner-Romanoff’s entrée to academia saw her serve as principal investigator of a research study while pursuing her master’s degree at Ohio State University. From 1999 to 2007, she worked as an adjunct and then assistant professor at Capital University, developing curricula and teaching classes in criminology and sociology.

Later, she transitioned to administration at Franklin University, rising to the positions of dean of the College of Health and Public Administration and associate provost for academic quality at the International Institute for Innovative Instruction. Subsequently, she served as assistant dean for academic excellence at the School of Professional Studies at New York University.
